Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Overview

Ford vs Tesla

The F-150 is a tested and trusted truck. It has been the best-selling truck in the U.S for the past 43 years. The Tesla Cybertruck on the other hand is an all-electric pick-up vehicle that was unveiled on the 21st of November, 2019.

The Ford F-150 already has a track record of success. It has been the best-selling truck for 44 consecutive years. The Tesla Cybertruck promises to deliver so much, but does this vehicle have what it takes to compete with the F-150? Can it deliver on what a truck buyer would want from a truck? We will find out in this guide.

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Price Comparison

Ford F150 vs Tesla Cybertruck

The Ford F-150 XL trim (which is the base option) is priced at $28,940. This price is the lowest starting price in the F-150 class. It compares favorably with the Tesla Cybertruck which has a starting price of $39,000.

The starting price mentioned above for the Cybertruck is for the single-motor variant. The dual-motor and tri-motor truck variants cost more since they offer better range, performance, and capability.

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Configuration Comparison

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Configuration Comparison

The Ford F-150 comes in different trim levels and variations, allowing for full customization. The Cybertruck on the other hand offers only different motor variants. It doesn’t offer a wide range of truck formats. The comparison between the F-150 and the Cybertruck is not a fair one, considering the different classifications of the two vehicles.

The Cybertruck will likely get classified as a medium-duty pickup; this is the same category the Ford Super-Duty series falls into. The Cybertruck should be compared with the F-250 or F-350 since they fall into the same category.

This is a more fair comparison. Comparing the Cybertruck with the F-150 is like comparing the F-150 to smaller trucks like Toyota Tacoma or Chevrolet Colorado and claiming that it’s a fair comparison.   Check out our comparison between F-150 and F250 here.

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Interior Design Comparison

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Interior Design Comparison

The Ford F-150 can hold between 3 and 6 occupants, depending on your choice of configuration. The Cybertruck does not offer different cab configurations. Its minimalist interior can hold 5 to 6 people, but it ends there. The F-150 has three (3) different cab configurations – Regular, SuperCab, and SuperCrew. This truck comes standard with a large 8-inch touchscreen and an optional 12-inch touchscreen.

Buyers can upgrade to the 12-inch touchscreen if they want. There are certain technologies available on the F-150 that are either not revealed on the Cybertruck or that are absent.

These technologies include BLIS with Trailer Coverage, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Hill Descent Control, SYNC 4, FordPass Connect, Android Auto, Ford & Waze, Apple CarPlay, Ford+Alexa, and the Ford CoPilot360 safety suite.

Tesla keeps making promises on several features of the Cybertruck, but from available reports, there is just a minimalist dashboard carrying one laptop touchscreen. The Cybertruck interior design would not appeal much to you if you weren’t impressed with the interior of the Model 3.

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Exterior Design and Size Dimensions Comparison

The exterior size is another aspect to judge between the Cybertruck and the Ford F-150. The Cybertruck has a length of 231.7 inches, a width of 79.8 inches, and a height of 75 inches. Initially, it was much larger, but slowly, it is transitioning into a normal pickup.

The F-150 has a length of 231.9 inches, a width of 79.9 inches, and a height of 77.2 inches. The weight of the two vehicles is another thing to consider. The Cybertruck is likely going to be classified as a Class 2B medium-duty pickup and so, we expect it to have a weight that is between 8,500 to 10,000 pounds. Electric vehicles are super heavy; the Cybertruck is no different.

The Ford F-150 has a weight that is between 4,069 to 5,697 pounds. When it comes to bed size, the Cybertruck only has one option: a 6.5ft truck bed. The F-150 on the other hand offers three-bed options: 5.5ft bed configuration, 6.5ft bed configuration, and the 8ft bed configuration.

From what we have above, you can see clearly that the Ford F-150 offers a more comprehensive range, making it perfect to suit any need. People need truck beds for various things; giving them options to meet their needs is important.

Initial reports on the design of the Cybertruck suggested that it was too large, awkward, and obstructive for use daily. The size received lots of negative feedback; this may be the reason Tesla decided to reduce the size.Find out which are the best tires for Ford F-150 here.

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Comparing Engines, Powertrain, and Performance

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck

The engine options are one of the major advantages of the Ford F-150. It gives you plenty of choices. You can choose from the 3.3L V6, 5.0L V8, twin-turbo 2.7L EcoBoost V6, twin-turbo 3.5L V6, 3.0L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V6, or the brand-new 3.5L PowerBoost Full-Hybrid V6 engine, which is the Ford F-150 first-ever Hybrid.

The F-150 has different engines to meet various needs. No matter the engine you choose, you will get paired to a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission with either a rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. You can read about the different F-150 engine options here.

The Cybertruck has three motor options: single-motor, dual-motor, and tri-motor. Only the single-motor variant has rear-wheel drive, the other two variants (dual-motor and tri-motor) have all-wheel drive. The single-motor Cybertruck is rated to drive about 250 miles before it will need a charge.

There are claims that the tri-motor Cybertruck can drive 500+ miles, but we can’t be so sure of this until we see it. The Ford F-15O standard range fuel tank can take up to 23 gallons and the extended range fuel tank can hold up to 36 gallons.

With a rating of 20 MPG city / 24 MPG highway, the F-150 can be said to have a maximum combined fuel range of around 624-864 miles (standard-extended range with combined fuel economy).

On Ford’s high-performance pickup truck (the Ford F-150 Raptor) which has a 19 MPG city / 25 MPG highway rating, you can still expect a fuel range of around 437-575 miles. From all these, we can see that at almost all levels, you’ll have to recharge the Cybertruck long before the F-150 will require a refuel.

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Towing Capacity and Payload Comparison

Ford F-150 vs. Tesla Cybertruck - Towing Capacity and Payload Comparison

The different Ford F-150 engine has different towing capacity and payloads. The maximum towing capacity is 14,000 pounds and the maximum payload is 3,325 pounds. The Tesla Cybertruck will have a maximum payload of 3,500 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds.

The Ford F-150 SuperCrew XL trim which can tow and haul the weight stated above has a starting price of $35,620 whereas the Cybertruck tri-motor which can tow and haul the weight specified above has a starting price of $69,900. In comparison with the F-150, the Cybertruck capability doesn’t impress given the difference in price and the truck classification.

The F-150 is what is truly impressive here. The Cybertruck will have a higher truck classification than the F-150 and so, their specs shouldn’t be close.

For instance, the F-250 has a maximum conventional tow rating of 24,200 pounds. The Cybertruck falls into the same truck classification as Ford's Super Duty F-series, but yet, its payload and towing capacity do not do any better than the F-150.

Tesla has not produced a truck before and so, they have no idea the strain the hauling, towing, or hauling + towing will put on the electric motors.

Therefore, it is not advisable for someone who wants to complete heavy-duty jobs with a reliable and consistent truck to buy the Cybertruck. By the way, if you are more leaning towards Ford F-150, check out which F-150 has the highest mileage here.

They also come with the Ford Co-Pilot 360 advanced safety suite, which is an advanced suite of standard driver-assist technologies that includes auto high-beam headlamps, lane-keeping assistance, and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking collection.

Ford F-150 has a good safety record with both the NHTSA and the IIHS. It has received numerous safety awards from the IIHS. On the other hand, the 2019 Model 3 was the first Tesla vehicle to receive an IIHS safety award. It comes after ten years of Tesla producing vehicles.

The Cybertruck also comes with the controversial Tesla Autopilot feature that can be upgraded for full self-driving capabilities for $10,000. However, this feature is not something most people are comfortable relying on at the moment. Learn more about Ford F-150's safety features in our blog post here.
